Perhaps someone will associate it with ESP (Extra-Sensory Power). Indeed, HSP can be related to this in some way - first coined by psychologist Elaine Aron in the 1990s, HSP stands for Highly Sensitive Person/ Personality which, as it name suggests, refers to someone who is very sensitive to external stimuli such as sound, light and smell etc. As such, they usually prefer tranquil environments, are more readily startled by sudden sound, made uncomfortable by strong lighting, and likely to avoid confronting situations. Moreover, they are prone to take more time to make decision and accept new things, and require more down time after a hectic day. Another synonymous term is SPS (Sensory Processing Sensitivity), which is in turn different from the clinical diagnosis Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD).</span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">According to Dr. Aron’s findings HPS is a strongly genetic trait, so there is little room for argument in the nature-nurture debate. She found that about 20% of the population in a variety of species exhibit this behaviour - perhaps a dynamic equilibrium for the </span></span><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">best </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">survival strategy of the species </span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">somehow related to </span><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">the </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">game theory</span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">. On the other hand, HPS is closely linked to introversion but not exactly identical. As research suggests, up to 70% of the HPS people are introversive. By the term “‘introversive” we mean a person who prefers to spend time in solitude, which does not necessarily mean he or she will feel uneasy in a highly stimulating environment; on the contrary, some HPS's like to spend time with people, only to feel overwhelmed in a noisy or crowded setting. There are subtle differences between the two personality traits.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">HSP is still a pioneering concept that even the circle of my psychologist friends have yet to hear about. Nonetheless, thanks to the affirmative movement of introversive personality, it seems there is a similar campaign for HSP in the making. Why the affirmative movement? Because in our contemporary society, we often praise the extroversive, aggressive, outgoing “party stars” (For more discussion on introversion, I highly recommend Susan Cain’s </span><i style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Power-Introverts-World-Talking-ebook/dp/B004J4WNL2/" target="_blank">Quiet</a></i><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">). On the other hand, the silent, reserved, book-loving nerds are usually shunned as aloof or even weak, prone to anxiety and depression. In a sense, highly sensitive people are indeed more susceptible to mental health problems; however, just as every coin has two sides there are pros and cons to being an HSP. Although HSPs are more “neurotic” as manifested in their Big Five Personality matrix, they also carry significant merits - they are more thoughtful, discriminative to sound, smell and touch, have stronger sense of aesthetics, and are more empathetic with higher conscience. In other words, both HSPs and non-HSPs have their own strengths and weaknesses, but in our sensation-seeking, speed-praising, eyeball-catching society, the mainstream culture seems to unequivocally tilt towards one side of the balance. As a result, I believe there is a need to promulgate this concept in our society, and advocate some changes to cater for HSPs.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">As an HSP myself, I had the <i>eureka </i>moment right after I learnt about this. I suddenly come to terms with circumstances that had been puzzling my whole life - why I am averse to packed and noisy places (e.g. Mongkok) while others crave for them; I cannot get my head around how others can “enjoy” the crowds on Christmas, New Year’s Eve or Chinese New Year flea market; a party with a large group of acquaintances is never my cup of tea, not to mention the thumping dance music at discos and pubs. It is not hard to imagine the agony such traits, </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">undesirably </span><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">regarded </span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">as “timid, reserved, pathetic” by our teenage peers, would have brought to an adolescent during this bitter period. Fortunately, I can finally be at peace with myself after this awakening. On the other hand, I am really into creative arts like writing, music, photography and drawing etc. I also like soothing songs and sophisticated movies, or enjoy a deep conversation with a few close friends in a tranquil setting, as well as appreciating the beauty of nature.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">I believe in the past people would use the word “quiet” to describe people with such attributes (</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">if not to convey a negative connotation)</span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">. In the future, however, “highly sensitive” might be the more scientific and appropriate term. Therefore, I believe our society, especially the education sector, should understand and promulgate this concept </span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">more</span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">, much like the way we </span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">promulgate </span><span style="font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap;">the concepts of autism, dyslexia and ADHD. This is not to discriminate against these people <i>per se</i>. Just the opposite, by appreciating the physiological basis of this phenomenon, we can teach HSP to accept themselves and embrace their own attributes, let them pursue their strengths and choose careers which match their personality. This is what the whole HSP campaign should be about - to create a more inclusive society so that people with different needs can thrive in it.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><i>Tabula rasa*</i>, romantic as it sounds, does not live up to the test in reality. Not only does it fail to eliminate inequality, it does more harm by distorting our very own nature. Time for us to scrap this hoax altogether.</span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 2.4; margin-bottom: 10pt; margin-top: 10pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>*Tabula rasa </i>is the Latin word for “blank slate”. It denotes the notion that everybody is born without predisposition towards good, evil or other attributes. Behaviourism followers later take this concept to the extreme and assert that all individual variations observed in humans are purely due to acquired experience. Hence they only emphasise on behavioural modification without any regard to the inherited differences. This has caused much tragedy to our society</span>.</span></span></p>MLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611777757898750665noreply@blogger.com0Hong Kong22.3193039 114.1693611-5.9909299361788442 79.0131111 50.629537736178847 149.3256111tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017194091012426764.post-58836601260095114002022-01-29T15:19:00.000-08:002024-01-06T06:03:50.201-08:00Book Review: Thinking, fast and slow<p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiS8lMwUOiyqLMyB4RTX8f9ANG_chhcJDzYI531M_d1tvDlJFfu2g8oFpWY-2-bgbuYkIQOVL9JG2VFlNKxi1eFmNChfeeBZFbo8zfYL0_1BfjkfLLlzTG1YyJJXT94Gvchz-nQ03_Ba6e4uPObgHSZPV50LssdgRuNyqQALbRtlxSTl0IDKL3gAL3Z=s898" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="898" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiS8lMwUOiyqLMyB4RTX8f9ANG_chhcJDzYI531M_d1tvDlJFfu2g8oFpWY-2-bgbuYkIQOVL9JG2VFlNKxi1eFmNChfeeBZFbo8zfYL0_1BfjkfLLlzTG1YyJJXT94Gvchz-nQ03_Ba6e4uPObgHSZPV50LssdgRuNyqQALbRtlxSTl0IDKL3gAL3Z=s320" width="214" /></a></div></div><p></p><ul style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.4; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em; text-align: justify;"><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Author: Daniel Kahneman</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Subject: Behavioral economics, decision-making</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Year: 2011</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">ISBN: 9780374275631</li></ul><div style="background-color: white;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><div><span style="color: #222222;">The title well deserved the acclaim as a landmark work in the realm of economics. </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"> </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">Consolidating decades of research finding in behavioural and cognitive psychology, Kahneman, along with his lifelong fellow Amos Tversky, sharply pinpointed the shortcomings of the contemporary doctrine of economics, i.e. the ideation of human being to the so-called "Econ", someone who is always consistent in his or her preferences and know exactly what he or she wants all the time. As demonstrated by the monumental evidence in the book, human beings are, through the instinctive "System 1" and to some degree the endorsement of the deliberative "System 2", far from rational in that sense. Numerous phenomena under which these errors could occur have been addressed, including priming, framing, the illusion of memory, the halo effect, "What you see is there it is" (WYSIATI), anchoring, availability heuristics…just to name a few. </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"> </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">From there the author diverts the book a little to a statistical discourse, where he discusses the Bayesian reasoning and debunks myths such as base rate neglect, regression to the mean etc. This is understandable given their relation to the cognitive bias, though some readers might find it difficult to follow. Again the narrative fallacy, hindsight bias, validity and pundit illusion as well as planning fallacy in Part III are genuine food for thought for decision makers to carefully ponder.</span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"> </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">Part IV enters Kahneman's own brilliant insights - the prospect theory to explain the circumstances under which people generally prefer loss aversion or risk seeking. This, coupled with the endowment effect, mental accounting and other similar paradoxes into which humans would easily fall trap, lay the foundation for behavioural economics that has been influential in recent years. Finally, Part V deals with the questions of subjective well-being, which probably what economy should ultimately be all about.</span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"> </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">On the downside, the book is quite mentally draining as a lot of terminology, experiment detail and statistical reasoning have been presented in the arguments - be prepared to engage your System 2 when going through the pages! However, if one wants a succinct summary to preserve his or her cognitive ease, I would highly recommend to read the conclusion, in particular "Econs and Humans" where not only a brief comparison of the two concepts are made, but its implication in the real world and sound application in government policies have been elegantly orchestrated.</span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"> </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">All in all, this is a masterpiece if you are into serious logical reasoning of human behaviour. If you are just looking for a self-growth quick-read, it might not be your first choice.</span></div></div></div>MLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611777757898750665noreply@blogger.com0Taipei City, Taiwan25.0329636 121.5654268-52.855096539026121 -19.059573200000003 90 -97.809573199999988tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017194091012426764.post-23503389616887493872022-01-05T13:31:00.001-08:002022-01-05T13:33:34.410-08:00Book review: Twisted tales - My life as a Mongolian contortionist<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjQgIrR_M096g_7iMEJW7M51v1hdp-OpstANbNxMxen0RG556O96Ba_qmkeImNqK5HSeiQ9xFEP_gfyRjKGu4E-iwqhaG7uYFYkTfmxa8XGINyVEXLYG00njR7N0UsrP3G7mRW1a0ZD_WcfwA9Ht1mmFc-IIbVTyiOWdr47AzuOOw23eKZyxPi2HEnK=s500" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="333" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjQgIrR_M096g_7iMEJW7M51v1hdp-OpstANbNxMxen0RG556O96Ba_qmkeImNqK5HSeiQ9xFEP_gfyRjKGu4E-iwqhaG7uYFYkTfmxa8XGINyVEXLYG00njR7N0UsrP3G7mRW1a0ZD_WcfwA9Ht1mmFc-IIbVTyiOWdr47AzuOOw23eKZyxPi2HEnK=s320" width="213" /></a></div></div><p></p><ul style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.4; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em; text-align: justify;"><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Author: Otgo Waller</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Subject: autobiography; contortion</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Year: 2017</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">ISBN: 9781504378611</li></ul><div style="background-color: white;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><div><span style="color: #222222;">Originally expecting to read stuff about contortion <i>per se</i>, only to later realize - to a delighted surprise - it is an autobiography of how a legendary Mongolian contortionist came to shine in Las Vegas. </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">Despite some word phrases found to be a bit odd, it is a truly enjoyable book. The writer has the feat to convey her genuine feelings to the readers without holding back. The beginning chapter of the backdrop against which she came to this world was almost like a fairy tale, so touching and poetic. Then came the stories of her loving family - her sister, parents and 'Grandpa', all so beautifully portrayed so readers can almost sense their presence. Then the dark episodes of sexual harassment, patriarchal societal control, trauma and losses, etc. She takes readers along with her personal journey with splendid narratives. Readers can easily immerse themselves into her story and experience the joy and sadness she went through as if they did in person. As the twilight finally arrived at the end of the tunnel, they could feel a great sense of relief and happiness. As one might imagine, readers might relate a lot of struggles in their life to her experience. Like her, we had my dreams but often got stuck and felt hopeless at times. Her tale inspired us to hang onto our faith. </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">Finally, recall that the writer said she had wanted to be a journalist before embarking on the contortionist journey, presumably because she had a keen interest in writing - this book has proven her talents in that regard.</span></div></div></div>MLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611777757898750665noreply@blogger.com0Hong Kong22.3193039 114.1693611-57.552120960971244 -26.455638899999997 90 -105.2056389tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017194091012426764.post-87443874999446338492021-09-29T11:45:00.000-07:002021-09-29T11:45:10.595-07:00《第一次下圍棋就上手》書評<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSeWS1iWKXmub7SZdRHFv7ucpgcwzUa2TPzPRTxaCiekAf7qYnP3uAr0bgUgsCXT4_yX2mSE8ElvDSPL1tvHYJItsevLG6PzeaNrxwSFcYuN1Gzdwj2WEKOWO-ysTXn9H_aSL4zvssuLY/s1695/9789864800254.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1695" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSeWS1iWKXmub7SZdRHFv7ucpgcwzUa2TPzPRTxaCiekAf7qYnP3uAr0bgUgsCXT4_yX2mSE8ElvDSPL1tvHYJItsevLG6PzeaNrxwSFcYuN1Gzdwj2WEKOWO-ysTXn9H_aSL4zvssuLY/w227-h320/9789864800254.jpg" width="227" /></a></div><br /><p></p><ul style="line-height: 1.4; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em; text-align: justify;"><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;"><b style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial;">作者:</span></b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial;"><b>劉至平</b></span></li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b style="color: #222222;">出版:</b><span style="color: #222222;"><b>台北</b></span></span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial;"><b>易博士</b></span></li><li style="color: #222222; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;"><b><span style="font-family: arial;">年份:2017</span></b></li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b style="color: #222222;">ISBN:</b></span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: arial;"><b>9789864800254</b></span></li></ul><span face="arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif" style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;"><div>作為一本介紹圍棋的入門書,這是一個上佳的選擇。 </div></span>MLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611777757898750665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017194091012426764.post-1703767318841394332021-07-12T15:13:00.006-07:002021-07-12T15:18:48.575-07:00Book review: Never split the difference - Negotiating as if your life depended on it<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXisWv1r6Etz-iLgIYUVCZ65rC4zBZQ8wia62x2fX7yhi_YexqlBfjq5Xw-Cwbaot_T2OaJJDkgm9aJECqFDgpVme5slNuSJhdUyCu8zZ-DnIKO1pUQF-R0QxwgiapM3xiry1UlfFQFiA/s430/9780062407801.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="430" data-original-width="284" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXisWv1r6Etz-iLgIYUVCZ65rC4zBZQ8wia62x2fX7yhi_YexqlBfjq5Xw-Cwbaot_T2OaJJDkgm9aJECqFDgpVme5slNuSJhdUyCu8zZ-DnIKO1pUQF-R0QxwgiapM3xiry1UlfFQFiA/w211-h320/9780062407801.jpg" width="211" /></a></div></div><p></p><ul style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.4; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em; text-align: justify;"><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Author: Chris Voss</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Subject: Negotiation</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Year: 2016</li><li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">ISBN: 9780062407801</li></ul><div style="background-color: white;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><div><span style="color: #222222;">If someone envisions a master of negotiation as an alpha male like Donald Trump who speaks the loudest to threaten everyone else into submission, this book will definitely turn your understanding upside down. </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">As a veteran FBI hostage negotiator for many years, the author has all the credibility to speak on this topic. In contrary to the traditional, rational problem solving approach which aims to separate emotional elements from the issue in order to arrive at a so-called "win-win" situation, he argues that humans are irrational beasts who more often than not act on impulsive feelings rather than meticulous calculation. And he also sees that such insight is not only for crisis handling but can also be applied to business and daily-life interactions.</span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">By borrowing concepts from counselling such as tactical empathy, active listening, emotional labelling etc., the author views the negotiation process as a way to create rapport with the subject in order to dismantle the emotional bomb built up inside his or her mind. Together with tricks like mirroring, calibrated questions, creating the illusion of control to distort the reality of the subjects, this can eventually lead to an outcome that is highly favourable to the negotiator instead of just "splitting the difference" between the two parties (hence the title of the book). He illustrates many of the ideas with his real-life hostage experiences, which make the theories both entertaining and convincing. </span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #222222;">Although I would not say everything said in the book is a totally brand-new idea, or everything will work magic as it is claimed, there is still much valuable takeaway from this. Highly recommended for those who want to improve their negotiation skills, or maybe are just curious about the weakness of our illogical minds.</span></div></div></div>MLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611777757898750665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017194091012426764.post-7182644822775881892020-12-30T13:48:00.003-08:002020-12-30T13:48:42.050-08:00《心態致勝:全新成功心理學》書評<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi88isCDbbBa28u2-3bqlqhyCHM7WEigPGvwd5ssvP77xhSP2xRTl2yxCJx0DjULSA4pPxIugZo9bAAKcDjCQ2G_wj1Uc1wjm3NpQORcGOND9fkHt6sKhOAf2GXeS-LUKirEePOErsa2Fg/s1703/9789864791897.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1703" data-original-width="1200" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi88isCDbbBa28u2-3bqlqhyCHM7WEigPGvwd5ssvP77xhSP2xRTl2yxCJx0DjULSA4pPxIugZo9bAAKcDjCQ2G_wj1Uc1wjm3NpQORcGOND9fkHt6sKhOAf2GXeS-LUKirEePOErsa2Fg/w194-h277/9789864791897.jpg" width="194" /></a></div><ul style="line-height: 1.4; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em; text-align: justify;"><li style="color: #222222; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;"><b><span style="font-family: arial;">作者:卡蘿. (Carol S. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yes, I am talking about MS Access. In the year of 2020. But why can't I?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Okay, this is indeed a very geeky thing to do. I created a World Cup database that can let user input the countries, teams, tournaments, etc. into the database, then most importantly, automatically compute all the group results and show the corresponding team presence during the knockout stage just by entering results of each match (including yellow/red cards which might be used during group ties).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKusnohTW_i0Uv-eeJRgLNFtYksv8jgfrXXq-F1uh_AEEgwvm8s3pGic03HJ-OdqO2ZDXEvuH2_1Dm5hKvOZfDMSOnKz0UqVYcdiVZO3w7sovwF-CVoCdxKzkFMJJBOBU-HLEWsvErdA/s1600/Group+standings.png" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="963" data-original-width="1600" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglKusnohTW_i0Uv-eeJRgLNFtYksv8jgfrXXq-F1uh_AEEgwvm8s3pGic03HJ-OdqO2ZDXEvuH2_1Dm5hKvOZfDMSOnKz0UqVYcdiVZO3w7sovwF-CVoCdxKzkFMJJBOBU-HLEWsvErdA/s640/Group+standings.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Notwithstanding the torture of fixing numerous trivial bugs, this is also a very interesting undertaking. To translate the finest FIFA World Cup group stage promoting rules into execution, and do it as succinct as possible, is no easy task. A similar case holds for the knockout stage. You need to compute what team names and their corresponding flags to show up at the right place without having much redundancy - I initially made too many layers of queries and rendered the chart non-executable. But the moment I succeeded, together with the beautiful flags showing up, the joy and satisfaction is tremendous.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here I am uploading database <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ckM1noMH6ge_M9CXegjWZkDlSfrz46C0/view?usp=sharing">here</a> for everybody usage. There is no password nor database protection so you can use it as freely as you want. However, if you do appreciate this and would like to explore further about this, do drop me a line. Normally I was thinking of creating a version for Euro 2020 but given the current pandemic there might be a year before it is due...(sigh). But if you are interested to sponsor to make any variations of the database, I am happy to hear about it.</div>

<span style="font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif;"><div style="color: #222222; font-size: 14.52px;">
</div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-size: 14.52px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
</div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
</div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
</div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
</div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
</div>
<div style="color: #222222;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222;">

</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span></div>

</ul>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>

It all began with outspoken Swedish journalist Mikael Blomkvist being sent to jail for allegedly defaming local tycoon Hans-Erik Wennerström. During this abysmal point in his life, retired national mogul Henrik Vanger approached him and invited him to Hedeby, a small, seclusive island in northern Sweden inhabited by the Vanger family. There Henrik offered Blomkvist a strange job - to solve the mysterious missing, or apparent murder, of his niece Harriet Vanger, happening over 40 years ago. </div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
Lured by the exceptionally generous remuneration and Henrik's promise to help avenge Wennerström, Blomkvist reluctantly took up the task and started to investigate Vanger's pedigree members on the island, using the pretext of writing a biography for Henrik. During this mission he requested a capable assistant to help him with information gathering, and here came in the punkish, mute, ghost-like computer prodigy Lisbeth Salander (a.k.a. the girl with the dragon tattoo, though the original Swedish version never adopted this title). </div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: red;">Warning: Spoilers below!</span></b></div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
Together the duo slowly unravelled more murders in and around this seemingly tranquil place. Evidence points to the existence of a religious fanatic, a serial killer, and most importantly - someone who exists among the Vanger family. Again, like other classic closed-suspect detective tales Blomkvist eventually discovered the culprit; in doing so his life was put at peril, only to be saved by Salander in the last minute. However, it was also discovered that Harriet was still alive, and with Blomkvist hunting her down she eventually reunited with Henrik. Needless to say with Henrik's help Blomkvist successfully fought back at Wennerström. Despite the dark tone throughout, the story had a happy ending.</div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #222222; text-align: justify;">
The story is great not only because of the entertaining elements of the crime suspense. There is much narration about Sweden's economic and political past, providing an excellent window to glimpse through the nation's modern history. Moreover, a lot has been dwelt on Salander's experience of sexual abuse, and her eventual revenge, which provided both excitement as well as reflection of the issue in our society. Last but not least, the romance between Blomkvist and Salander (and another member of the Vanger family) satisfies the fantasy of most readers, although I am not sure if it is a bit low-taste for a serious crime thriller. But all in all, this book is a masterpiece.</div>

</span></span></div><div><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 13.2px;"><br />

</span></span></div>

</ul>
</div>
</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span></div>

</div>
</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<span style="color: red; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">
<div>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
MLhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16611777757898750665noreply@blogger.com0
